After several years of acoustic coffee-house gigs and one-off bar jams with cover bands, Animalweapon began as Raleigh, NC native Patrick Cortes’ experiment with electronic music in the fall of 2010 with the song “Mexican Standoff.”
The music was and remains decidedly, albeit broadly, electronic, shifting between ambient soundscapes, skittering laptop hip hop beats and flirting with club music while remaining firmly bedroom pop.
Animalweapon began performing live shows in late 2011, and in the spring of 2012 released his first full-length album, Good Luck, which was added to rotation on Raleigh’s WKNC soon after.
The fall of 2015 saw the release of the EP Flares and Signal Fires. At the same time he was finishing the EP, Animalweapon began to contribute music to the popular podcast Undisclosed, a follow-up to the media phenomenon Serial hosted by Rabia Chaudry. Animalweapon was awarded the 2017 Webby Award for Best Sound Design/Original Music Score for his work on the podcast.
2019 will see the release of Animalweapon’s second full-length album. A sprawling amalgamation of dancy pop, atmospheric experimentation, even vague R&B, the album is a logical departure from previous efforts, in both scale and sound. Nearly three years in the making, it is his most ambitious yet.
